Sony's PlayStation 4 pwns Xbox in the United States

Never mind, Microsoft, the real money's in GAMES, right?

Sony has claimed an early victory in the next generation console wars after saying it had sold twice as many consoles in the US during January than its arch-rival Microsoft.

However, Redmond hit back with the claim that it managed to shift more games than Sony over the same period.

Above is a gushing tweet from Sony on its Playstation Twitter account.

Never to be left out in the cold, Microsoft hit back with the claim that it had sold the most games across all console platforms in January. Numbers from analysis firm NPD found that 2.27 million Xbox games were sold in January, making up 47 per cent of software market share.

It added that its new Xbox One consoles were selling like hotcakes, flying off the shelves 2.29 times as quickly as the Xbox 360 had during its first three months of sale.

"Fans continue to show their excitement for new generation Xbox One games, with US consumers purchasing an average of 2.7 games per console since launch," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business for Xbox.

"This amazing success is due in large part to our unrivalled games lineup, first class Xbox Live multiplayer games service and a platform for game developers that offers unique capabilities such as Kinect and Xbox SmartGlass," he said.

Regardless of this, NPD's figures suggested Sony's console outsold the Xbox by two to one.

The Japanese firm questioned Microsoft's sales claims, which were based on the sum of both Xbox 360 and Xbox One sales.

“It’s clear gamers are choosing PlayStation as the best place to play, with PS4 software sales ranking No. 1 in January, highlighted by strong sales of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which sold twice as many units on PS4 than any other platform,” Sony spokesperson Guy Longworth said. ®
