Free 2004-spec AS/400 pops up in the cloud

German hosting company thinks you might want to go back in time and Tweet

German hosting company Rechenzentrum Kreuznach has popped an AS/400 into the cloud, and anyone can use it for free.

Available here the machine is running V5R3 software that appears to have been released in 2004 and to have had support withdrawn in April 2009.

Rechenzentrum Kreuznach asks would-be users to sign up for an account before you can access the cloudy relic, but says it will be online 24x7 and suggests one use might be the creation of a very unusual Twitter client.

Why is the company bothering? Rechenzentrum Kreuznach specialises in hosting vintage IBM kit. As its site says, “we will host everything - as long as it is an IBM AS/400, iSeries or IBM Power server”. That makes the free AS/400 a handy proof of concept. And a lot of fun for those so inclined. ®
