APNIC receives recovered /12 from IANA
IPv4 is still breathing
The Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) has received a /12 block of IPv4 addresses from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
The addresses come from those “recovered” by IANA. Recovery usually comes about when a user decides not to use a block of addresses, or a workable fragment of the IPv4 address space is identified.
Whatever the source of this new batch, APNIC says its members are now free to apply for some new IPv4 addresses … if they don't already own all of a /22. Applications can be made here.
The availability of the /12 is a sign that IANA's recycling efforts are functioning as intended, but as APNIC's post about the newly-discovered trove makes plain, new blocks won't pop up forever. ®
