Anywhere Software B4A

If the kid wants to code, how about they learn to write apps for their mobile? Of course, the official SDK is free, but forcing children to learn Java at Christmas is probably against the law. B4A, formerly Basic4Android, makes it much simpler to write apps. It includes a visual designer for the screen layouts, and a huge range of freely usable libraries that save plenty of time.

The language itself is very similar to Visual Basic and there's also B4i to create apps for iOS, from £80. (Of course, iOS users still need to join Apple's developer program as well). If you don't want to spend any money, B4J is free and lets you create Java apps by programming in Basic.

A self-obsessed teen? Whatever next! If you've a keen snapper or hopeless narcissist to buy gifts for, how about boosting the power of their phone camera? That's what Olloclip aims to do for iPhone, as well as Samsung S4 or S5. For £40 you can Stick a Selfie 3 in one lens for iPhone 5 and 5S under the tree. It provides a fish-eye view, a wider angle, or a macro for close up shots.

The lens comes in different colours, and can be hung from a lanyard so it doesn't have to be screwed onto the phone all the time. There are also telephoto lenses for some phones too. Just make sure no one's buying them a new mobile for Christmas, as the lenses are specific to different phone models. ®
