Hipsters ahoy! Top Ten BOARD games for festive family fun
Just in case you’re bored this Xmas
Product Roundup There’s nothing cooler than board games at the moment, whether they are being referenced by the Marsh family in South Park, or popularised by one of the pop-up gaming bars in East London. Board games are now selling in droves. Often produced by independent companies, they can be intellectually rigorous and visually stunning.
If you want a deeper gaming experience than Call of Duty and would rather be called a gamer than a video gamer, here’s an overview of the top ten table top games I have played this year. Listed in order of difficulty, these often sophisticated social games, bring the act of rolling a die firmly into the 21st century.
Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers
Carcassonne is a great starter or introduction back into board gaming, simple rules and easy to master, each player takes a turn placing a tile and then deciding whether or not to place a one of their meeples on the board. Meeples are little wooden tokens or characters that can score points immediately or be placed to control areas that I can build upon, such as connecting river tiles as I get extra points for fishes.
When all the tiles are placed, the game is over and the tally’s counted. The player with the most points at the end wins. The game doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of counters and the play time is under an hour, so this makes for a quick competitive game. Watch out for tigers and always control some mammoths!
Bravest Warriors Co-operative Dice Game
I love Catbug so much I have him tattooed on my wrist and the dice – which show all the characters from my favourite YouTube hit – are super cute.
This game didn’t seem overly complicated so I have no idea why you would need to be over 15 to play it? It’s a simple and fast paced game where players roll and pool dice to complete a variety of spaced out missions and save the multiverse!! Nice little pub game or and a must for fans of the show. “Jump for your lives”.
Players 1-6 (co-operative), aged 15 +
