Hipsters ahoy! Top Ten BOARD games for festive family fun

Just in case you’re bored this Xmas

Dixit Odyssey

RH Numbers

Dixit is quite an abstract game and usually gives my brain a work out. I’ve found it to be an interesting party game that changes depending on the group dynamic. For each turn, a player takes on the title of storyteller and describes a card from their hand and then all other players must put a card from their hand into the pile of cards. All cards a mixed up and then put face up on the table and players have to try and choose the storyteller’s card.

If I’m too obvious and everyone chooses my card, I don’t score and if no one chooses my card I don’t score. The trick is to find a card that you can use as a hint (a shared experience maybe) with one other person in the group, so we both score. The player with the highest score wins. This game would make an awesome Christmas present for any arty friends as the painted cards, board and tokens all look visually intriguing and ooze attention to detail.

Settlers of Catan

RH Numbers

This game is the genesis of my new found love of board games. The intrigue, the infighting due to selective trading, the competitive intoxication of building the longest road... this is a serious game. Settlers is a race to gain resources and expand across the board building road, settlements and cities to score ten victory points and win the game.

The Settlers of Catan

It’s seriously addictive and I would say Settlers is an essential addition to any gaming household. Development cards spice things up by allowing you to take cards from your friends or collect soldiers to gain the biggest army. Beware the robber; roll a seven when the board is full and playtime can get nasty!
