Hipsters ahoy! Top Ten BOARD games for festive family fun

Just in case you’re bored this Xmas

Star Wars: Imperial Assault

RH Numbers

If you’ve come over all agitated for a Star Wars fix after the glimpse of a teaser trailer just released for the Force Awakens, then to keep your pangs at bay, you might want to invest in Star Wars: Imperial Assault. A “dungeon crawling” adventure set firmly in the Star Wars universe, I suspect it features highly on a lot of geeks' Christmas lists this year.

Star Wars: Imperial Assault

The game brings together the perfect combination of aspects needed in a boardgame for total immersion. The miniatures are particularly well designed and of a stunning quality, just crying out for an equally impressive paintjob. One player commands the vast armies of the Galactic Empire, threatening to destroy the Rebellion for good. Up to four other players play the heroes of the Rebel Alliance, engaging in undercover manoeuvres to destabilise the Empire’s rule.

Playing through the campaign, both the Imperial player and the Rebel heroes rack up experience and skills, allowing them to progress as the story develops. Booster pack style sets are incoming introducing all the favourite Star Wars characters, as well as several new missions. Complex enough to lose me and my housemates for the next three weeks before term starts up again.

Zombicide Prison Outbreak

Another game that I could just keep playing for weeks is Zombicide Prison Outbreak. Unlike the previous version of the game, now, when a player dies, they rise again as a Zombivor with the same experience points and more hit points than ever.

Zombicide Prison Outbreak

My character gains experience and levels up during each mission which sets the zombie intensity for the entire party, results in more and more zombies with different horrifying characteristics crawling onto the board.

What I love most about this game is the cooperative play, with everyone using their specific complimentary skills to complete each mission that makes up part of an overall campaign. After playing the first two missions, my friends were keen to organise a weekly Zombicide games night, but I said not until my faithful doggy companions arrive!
