LEAKED Qualcomm processors reveal sexy new specs

Unlikely to be available for months and months however

Specs of the new Qualcomm 820 and 600 family processors have leaked out ahead of the Mobile World Congress.

The new 820 is the successor to the Snapdragon 810, which was launched last April.

Qualcomm echoes Elite and names its cores after snakes. The new TS2 core is a 14nm processor, which Tom’s Hardware believes is codenamed Taipan.

The Qualcomm 820 uses eight cores and eschews ARM’s preferred big.LITTLE architecture which is aimed at running simple tasks on lower power cores while big ones do the occasional heavy lifting.

It may be that Qualcomm believes that the new 14nm process is miserly enough with power. The Snapdragon 810 was a volte face for Qualcomm after calling eight-core processors dumb.

The roadmap leaks come from the twitter feed Leakfly:

The Snapdragon 820 gets a new model of Adreno GPU, dubbed the 530, and MDM9X55 modem which meets the 3GPP spec for CAT-10 and so has a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 452Mbps.

Lesser processors on the roadmap are the Snapdragon 815, which does use big.LITTLE, and which will be fabbed on a 20nm process and four new 600 series processors.

The 625 and 629 have the same specifications but presumably use different bits of radio spectrum to cope with the mess the world has made of allocating LTE frequencies.

There are no dates on the leaked roadmap and there are more details on the lesser processors so one might expect the Snapdragon 820 to be some way off.

The Snapdragon 810 has only just started showing up in products such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to wander into a Carphone Warehouse and buy anything with a Snapdragon 820 this side of Christmas. ®
