Cisco wraps Hadoop in warm embrace of resale partnership

Borg swallows a little bit of elephant

Cisco wants to keep it in the family: since the Internet of Things is going to be a source of lots of data, it's signed reseller agreements with Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR.

The agreement will give customers a single source of IoT comms integrated with the data analytics it reckons enterprises will need, both to make sense of the incoming firehose of data, and to keep network traffic at a manageable level.

At the same time, the Borg says its UCS Director Express for Big Data is now generally available.

That brings single-touch installation for Hadoop – whether Cloudera's, Hortonworks' or MapR's flavour – to the rack and blade servers in Cisco's Unified Computing System, which in September 2014 got expanded with new cloud-scale modular servers.

The company's announcement notes that the Hadoop offerings will be integrated into Cisco's Data Virtualisation environment, letting customers “abstract, access and query data” before dropping it into a Hadoop cluster.

The new partners have now been added to Cisco's price list, and the company also notes that the single-source sales model will let customers buy hardware and software as a single purchase, “lowering the overall cost of storing data”. ®
