Storage biz gets down with da kidz, announces new update on Reddit

Veritas ready to let NetBackup off the leash

Comment A NetBackup update is coming from Veritas, according to a Reddit forum.

Veritas hosted an AMA (ask me anything) discussion on 13 March which has been posted to Reddit. According to the postings, NetBackup 7.7 will feature more capabilities in these following areas:

  • Cloud storage, with Google Cloud Storage Nearline mentioned
  • Virtualisation
  • Oracle
  • SQL Server
  • Self-service,
  • VVOLs – virtual volumes
  • Snapshots and more

Deduplication and acceleration are also mentioned in connection with Google’s cloud storage in the discussion.

These build on the deduplication and acceleration in Symantec’s NetBackup 5230 and 5330 purpose-built backup appliances (PBBA).

Reading the discussion on Reddit the NetBackup people are enthused about the splitting-off of Veritas and keen to improve the product and its licensing.

Poster glenrsimon said: “Internally, we're all feeling pretty excited about it.”

Looks like previous Symantec stifling of the product is going away. ®
