Veeam's plan: Ignore MBA marketers, don't covet magazine covers

And don't panic about the cloud, because every platform has gaps that need tools says CEO Ratmir Timashev

Every platform needs tools

What's next? The company last week announced version nine of its Availability Suite. This time around the headline feature is support for snapshots of EMC's VNX and VNXe arrays.

Some time this year, Timashev said, the company will offer replication of data to the cloud.

On cloud, the CEO feels that the likes of Microsoft and VMware have made big bets on disaster recovery because an incident will demonstrate their clouds' readiness for live workloads. Both are therefore keen to work with Veeam because its customer base represents an opportunity to introduce people to their clouds. But Timashev fears neither because he feels that new platforms always mean new opportunities to fill gaps with tools. That's how he and Baronov built their first company, Aelita Software (later sold to Quest). It's how he thinks Veeam will set sail for a billion bucks of annual revenue.

New offices in Japan and Singapore will help, too: Timashev dropped in to Sydney on an Asian swing to cement the company's regional presence.

A bit of numerology is expected to help growth, too. Veeam spent a while in stealth mode before releasing products, but the date on which it opened and office and officially started operations wasn't the date on which it started trading. Timsashev said he eventually asked a Russian numerologist what date the company should celebrate as its birthday. The answer was that the date on which it released its first product was propitious, so that October 2006 day has now become official.

While Timashev revealed the numerology story without prompting and mentioned family in Russia, he wasn't willing to go on the record with comments on his native Russia's decision to pursue its own technology directions. "Anything about Putin is off the record," he half-laughed. ®
