LG's six-sided battery to take smart watches into new timezones

We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make batteries better, stronger, faster

LG Chem, the chemicals arm of the giant LG conglomerate, has revealed a hexagonal battery for smart watches.

The idea here is simple: smart watches are round-ish. Batteries today are usually rectangular. So by building a hexagonal battery (not a symmetrical hexagon, sadly) it becomes possible to pack extra power into a wearable.

How much power? LG Chem reckons regular hexagons will give you an extra four hours a day of hot wrist action compared with rectangles.

The company'stold Korea Times it worked with a technology firm to develop the device, but the Korean paper's sources said Apple was not that firm.

That's no surprise: LG's aiming the hexagonal battery at round smartwatches, like its own “Urbane” range and Apple's not gone for round devices. But LG Chem reckons it can help anyway: the hexagonal battery will be sold to other kit-makers and the company has patents and processes to make batteries in all manner of shapes and sizes. ®
