Azure's already a AU$50 million business in Australia

Redmondian outpost feels it's catching AWS, fast

Australia's financial year ended on Tuesday, and Vulture South understands that when the F9 key was pressed to do all the sums, the number in the cell marked “Azure revenue” came in at about AU$50m, plus or minus $5m (about US$38.2m, £24m).

That sum was all Azure revenue – Office 365 isn't counted in the calculations.

The Reg understands that the sums revealed this week represent very strong growth – 250 per cent or more – for Microsoft's Australian Azure operations.

As a point of contrast, Amazon Web Services' most recent local filings reported about $70m of incoming cash, making Microsoft a very fast mover down under.

Reasons for Microsoft's growth isn't hard to decipher. Secular interest in cloud is helping all providers, and the company flicked the switch on local bit barns late last year, which would have given things a nice kick along. Microsoft's Sydney and Melbourne sheds are both certified for government work and The Reg understands public sector entities have not been shy of the cloud once it arrives in a form they can consume without conniptions.

Vulture South has been led to believe, by well-placed people, that targets for cloud revenue at Microsoft and AWS are climbing quite steeply. By this time next year we expect the total revenue for cloud to be rather higher than the combined $120m or so AWS and Microsoft can currently claim. ®
