Outspoken backbencher Tom Watson bags deputy leader role

Jeremy Corbyn has been elected as the new leader of the Labour Party, following a three-month-long contest.

The left-winger won 59.5 per cent of the votes to secure the leadership.

Outspoken backbencher Tom Watson was elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party on Saturday morning.

Watson, speaking ahead of Corbyn's storming win, said: "I promise to back our new leader 100 per cent ... and I ask you to do the same."

He added that a "new vision" of the country was needed and said that, despite being ridiculed by the Tory Party, Labour would mount a fierce opposition against Whitehall's incumbents and claimed that Labour would return to power in 2020.

Corbyn took to the stage immediately after it was confirmed that the 66-year-old had secured 251,417 votes in the first round to be elected leader of the Labour Party. ®
