Irish electricity company threatens to cut off graveyard

Unregistered 'occupant' receives disconnection notice

Those readers who believe that death will finally deliver them from the attentions of utility companies are advised not to pop their clogs in Ireland, or at least not in County Kerry.

That's the lesson to be learned from a letter allegedly dispatched by Electric Ireland to "The Occupant, Killiney Graveyard, Castlegregory, Kerry"...

The missive reads:

PLEASE REGISTER YOUR ACCOUNT

Dear SIR/MADAM,

Our records show that there is no customer registered at the above address.

To ensure that the electricity supply remains connected, you will need to register with us. To do this, simply telephone us on 1850 372 372 (Monday - Saturday, 8 am - 8 pm).

We look forward to hearing from you and providing you with the best possible service.

Please note, a visit by a Networks Technician to your premises will incur a minimum charge of €70.00 + VAT.

The letter popped up here, where one commenter notes that since the graveyard, or at least the church (pictured below on Street View), appears to be hooked up to the grid, someone may in fact need to do some coughing for the juice.

We'll leave readers to decide if Irish electricity companies do indeed pursue customers into the hereafter, or it's simply a matter for a living representative of the Catholic church. ®
