Amazon: Hey pal, since you're shifting all your IT over to AWS, why not that email server, too?
What do you mean you forgot about WorkMail?
AWS has flipped the switch on its WorkMail calendar and email service to bring it into general availability.
Customers will now be able to sign up for WorkMail at a rate of $4 per user monthly. Each user receives 50GB of storage on the hosted service. AWS said the service is currently running out of the US West (Oregon), US East (Virginia) and Europe (Ireland) facilities, and customers have the option to limit operation and storage of their server instances to one or more of the regions.
Amazon's AWS first introduced WorkMail in January of last year, running the mail and calendar service as a trial. The service, designed to complement other AWS cloud offerings, is particularly targeted at businesses running Microsoft's Exchange platform.
AWS said WorkMail will operate as a web-based service but will also support native clients on OS X and Windows, including Apple Mail, Outlook and Exchange. The service will also support ActiveSync clients for iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.
Also in the works from AWS is a journaling capability that will allow the service to work with email archiving tools.
AWS said it plans to further integrate the email and calendar features in WorkMail to share free/busy information and a universal address book across groups. ®
PS: AWS has just cut the prices for its C4, M4, and R3 instances in its EC2 cloud by five per cent.
