HSBC online banking outage: Moneymen are 'still under attack'

Denial of service woes continue as service staggers to feet

HSBC has admitted it still facing a sustained denial of service attack, after the incident which began this morning left customers unable to use their online banking services.

John Hackett, the bank's UK chief operating officer, said: “HSBC’s internet and mobile services have partially recovered, and we continue to work to restore a full service. We are continuing to experience attempted denial of service attacks and we are closely monitoring the situation with the authorities."

He said: "We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience this may have caused."

The news comes just days before thousands of customers rush to file their online self assessment tax returns.

It is the second time this month that Hackett has been forced to make a public apology for a lack of available services. Earlier this month he said the bank was "profoundly sorry" for an outage that lasted for two days.

Hackett said customers currently unable to access the service and who need to make an urgent payment “can visit our branch network or contact Personal Telephone Banking between 8am and 10pm on 03457 404 404.”

He added: "Please be aware that we are experiencing extremely high call volumes.” ®
