Canonical steps up to the NexentaEdge, jumps aboard OpenStack

Ubuntu weaves edgy spells with Juju to charm Ubuntu folk

Nexenta and Canonical have created a joint NexentaEdge and Ubuntu OpenStack offering.

The two companies say more than half of the world’s OpenStack deployments are built on Ubuntu. Canonical has integrated NexentaEdge with with its Juju high-level service model for automating application deployment and management.

NexentaEdge is a combined block and object access storage software offering.

Volkswagen recently decided to focus on OpenStack (instead of Mirantis) to support internal and consumer-facing applications and will connect people across Volkswagen, its dealers and suppliers. This is a nice OpenStack win as it involves tens of thousands of accessing nodes and dozens of data centres.

With other users, such as AT&T, BMW, Ericsson, GAP and Walmart, OpenStack is becoming what Forester Research calls the dominant platform for private cloud: enterprise data centres offering cloud-like services.

Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth was quoted as saying Canonical looked to Nexenta to help develop a comprehensive enterprise OpenStack offering and provide “technical expertise and assistance in optimising scale-out and scale-up workloads including ZFS for Ubuntu.”

Customers can buy NexentaEdge directly from Canonical’s Juju Charm Store or from their preferred Canonical sales rep or partner. ®
