IDC says virtual reality will be a US$2.3bn market this year.
The analyst firm says about 9.6 million sets of goggles will ship this year, with Samsung, Sony, HTC, and Oculus the market leaders.
Gamers will be the main buyers.
Augmented reality remains a far smaller market, with predicted shipments to reach 400,000.
