Red Hat at Cambridge

The University of Cambridge is moving to paid cloud in a major HPC project.

The university is rolling out Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux with OpenStack, replacing an unnamed free, community-supported Linux. The move was necessitated by a need for more powerful and supported OpenStack cloud in support of running larger datasets and coping with privacy issues, the University said. The HPC set-up will be used to crunch large sets of patient data for biomedical research. Paul Calleja, University director of research and institutional services, said Red Hat OpenStack had been chosen for its high network security and ability to handle multiple users on one server. Red Hat said it was “thrilled” to land the deal, noting “HPC and scientific research is an area where OpenStack’s scalability shines.” ®
