Cisco: 'No truth' to rumour of Nutanix software on UCS servers

Yet another hyper-converged offering from Netzilla?

We are hearing Cisco is going to partner with Nutanix and have Nutanix hyper-convergence software sold on UCS servers, echoing similar meet-in-the-channel partnership deals it has with SimpliVity and others. The company has denied it, though.

The last hyper-converged infrastructure appliance (HCIA) news from Cisco was HyperFlex which Cisco supplies as UCS servers loaded with Springpath HALO software. Cisvo invested in Springpath as part of this deal.

Cisco also has a partnership with SimpliVity for its HCIA software, and SimpliVity has has sold more than 1,000 systems based in Cisco's UCS servers to more than 200 customers.

Asked to comment on the Nutanix deal a Cisco spokesperson said: "We don't comment on rumour and speculation."

Nutanix's Chris Morgan, VP of Channel, offered this comment: "Nutanix has two strategic OEM partners: Dell and Lenovo. We are very happy with our success and momentum with both partners, and remain fully committed to building these relationships globally."

A second Nutanix spokesperson said: "We would also like to add that there is no truth to the rumour."

Two no-comments there, one denying that a deal exists.

If the deal is real then it's testimony to the power of server product marketing and the percveived need not to miss out on server-based HCIA sales through missing software. Server-focussed stystem vendors like Cisco and Lenovo like having a harem of HCIA software vendors, and the HCIA vendors, all startups, like having access to the server vendors' channels for their software.

As Nutanix is the HCIA leader then both it and Cisco would/should/could benefit from Nutanix-flavoured UCS HCIA kit. If the deal information is true then it's a hedge exercise by Cisco and a bit of a bummer for Springpath.

If the deal story is false then the world's population of wasteful rumour and speculation bits has just been increased. ®
