Violin Memory CTO and co-founder walks, starts up own outfit
Sets up DBM Cloud Systems with former Violin staff
Jon Bennett, co-founder and CTO of Violin Memory, has left Violin and set up DBM Cloud Systems, where he is CTO.
Violin chief marketing officer Amy Love said: “He has moved on after more than 10 years with Violin Memory. He has joined Dixon Doll’s early stage company as CTO. We hosted an employee party for him at the end of May to thank him for his vision, leadership, and commitment. We leave on very good terms and wish him the very best with his next endeavour.”
She quoted from an email sent by CEO Kevin DeNuccio regarding Jon, which said: "Jon is a unique technical giant in our industry and Violin is fortunate to have had his innovations to build our company and strategy upon.”
Dixon Doll has been an SVP for corporate development at Fusion-io, then joined Violin as Chief Operating Officer reporting to then-CEO Don Basile, who had also left Fusion-io.
Jeffrey Morrison is DBM’s SVP for International Sales. Coincidentally Doll, Bennett and Morrison’s last name initials form “DBM.”

Morrison was VP and general manager, Asia Pacific, for Violin from 2012 to 2015.
A fourth DBM exec is Al Basseri, who left Tegile, where he was VP for solution architects, and has joined DBM as SVP Field Engineering. Basseri is an ex-Violin Memory VP of sales engineering.
Doll left Violin in January 2014 and has been involved with various investments since then. DBM Cloud Systems says it is involved with software-defined storage for hybrid and private clouds: “Our mission is to provide customers with an open, reliable, scalable and secure solution for handling the challenges of object data growth and the utilisation of Cloud infrastructures. DBM delivers software and services to deliver complete control over your Enterprise infrastructure and heterogenous data sets.”
It says it, with customers will “jointly develop an analysis of your total data picture and growth projections, then customise your solution for your business. Our team will illustrate the ease and efficiency of modernising your data management and storage infrastructure, leveraging Cloud models and open storage solutions, for dramatic cost savings! “
DBM Cloud Systems owns Storiant trademarks. Storiant was an object storage startup which claimed its customers could use its technology to store petabyte-scale data in a private cloud at a price less than public cloud storage.
Jon Bennett is based in Boston, while the other three are in the San Francisco area.
Donpaul Stephens, the other Violin Memory co-founder, left the firm in May 2012 and is currently VP for Product Development at Oracle, joining in March this year. We understand he reports to Thomas Kurian, President for Product Development at Oracle, who is the twin brother of NetApp CEO George Kurian. What a small world we live in. ®
