SoftLayer embiggens its cloud VMs

Not quite at AWS or Azure scale this time around, but engorging nicely

SoftLayer has announced new and larger cloud VMs.

Possibly to prevent easy spreadsheet comparisons between its cloud and rivals', SoftLayer has published specs of the new machines as images. Hence the JPG below.

All the cool kids these days offer sliders to build cloud servers. SoftLayer's joined that gang with the effort displayed below.

Inasmuch as storage is quite useful, this server configuration looks a bit odd

SoftLayer reckons the new instances are jolly fine for analytics. Which is just what AWS says about its T1 instances that pack u to 2TB of RAM and Azure says of its GPU-enhanced DV2 instances.

Does size matter in the cloud or is it what you do with it that counts? IBM/SoftLayer may be fonder of the second suggestion, as it throws in “unmetered bandwidth across our private and management networks at no additional charge, and unmetered inbound bandwidth on our public network” for those who buy servers in its cloud. The Register often hears of organisations that find their bills for cloudy comms near or exceed the sums required to rent servers. IBM may not be able to claim the cloud VM crown with these new offerings, but does have a decent story. Now if only it would let us cut and paste ... ®
