Microsoft and Salesforce strike up Lightning-Outlook love

Microsoft’s Outlook email client has had a Lightning makeover for Salesforce’s CRM.

The companies on Tuesday announced Lightning for Outlook, integrating Microsoft’s popular email client with Salesforce’s new-ish CRM.

Lightning is the HTML5-edition of Salesforce’s as-a-service platform and UI announced in October 2014.

Lightning Experience in Outlook – Microsoft’s email client - is re-redesigned for the new Salesforce UI.

New Lightning Sync to automatically sync contacts and calendar events between Outlook and Salesforce, and Lightning Components in Outlook, to easily add new apps from Salesforce and partners apps on the company’s App Exchange.

Microsoft shops need Outlooks 2013 and 2016 for Windows, Outlook 2016 for Mac or Outlook for Web with Office 365, Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2016.

It’s the latest cosying up in the pair’s relationship, which began in May 2015.

Following a range of initial integrations that included Salesforce and Outlook and Sync and Exchange, SharePoint and Office 365, the partnership was last September updated with an embrace of the newer Lightning UI for Microsoft’s Skype and OneNote, Office, plus Salesforce integration with Microsoft’s Office Graph and Delve for collaboration and discovery. ®
