Micron revealed at the Flash Memory Summit this week that it will brand its XPoint tech as QuantX.
Intel has been splattering the world with Optane XPoint branding for a while. Micron has finally caught up and it will have separate QuantX branding for its XPoint technology-based products. It's talking to SSD manufacturers about using its QuantX chips, and also to storage array suppliers.
As QuantX pricing will be 4-5 times more than NAND and about half that of DRAM, it looks likely to be a technology to sit in the price/performance gap between memory and flash. Micron has data centre customers in its sights rather than gamers. Extreme low-latency arrays (think NVME over fabrics) could use QuantX instead of NAND SSDs but, otherwise, it looks like a server play.
Expect product in the back half of 2017, several months after Intel Optane arrives. ®
