UK AI ethics board to launch

The Alan Turing Institute has agreed to set up a UK AI ethics board in partnership with the UK government.

In a letter made public by the Science and Technology Select Committee, the Alan Turing Institute said it welcomed the opportunity to work with the government in shaping AI development.

The move comes after the select committee released the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence report last month, criticizing the government over a lack of leadership or clear direction in dealing with the ethical, social and legal implications of AI.

A strong recommendation was made to create a UK AI ethics board under the Alan Turing Institute – a newly founded research institute specializing in data science.

"Should this recommendation be taken forward, we would very much welcome the opportunity to lead the creation of the Commission," Sir Alan Wilson, CEO of The Allen Turing Institute, wrote.

The government has not responded yet. ®
