Student clusterers blow off steam with VR space shooter at SUSE booth

Stay tuned for the final results

HPC Blog There was some time for fun at the recently concluded SC16 Student Cluster Competition. Fortunately for us, right next to where the competition was held stood the SUSE booth, which was equipped with a great VR "space pirate" shooter. This, of course, captured our students' attention – particularly one from Team Munich.

He went ahead and organised a challenge between the teams – one representative for each team will battle the pirates to the death. Even better, he worked with SUSE to get a time when the teams could compete head-to-head.

I couldn't be there for the competition due to business meetings, but our special correspondent Maddie stepped up to the plate (and the Canon XA-20) to document the pirate battles. She did a great job, as you'll see in the video below...

So what prizes did the winner (Tristan Sweeny from Team NEU/Auburn) take home? It was a veritable treasure box of, well, treasures. First, he got a SUSE backpack and stuffed animal, plus a hat – which was pretty cool. But then he received the prize from the Student Cluster Competition – a baggie containing a lightly used 10" InfiniBand cable and $42 of cold, hard cash. Pretty good haul for kicking some pirate ass, eh?

Next up, we'll unveil our analysis of the final results. Stay tuned...
