Apple's Airpod wireless earbuds finally go on sale after six-week delay

In limited quantities, some time next week. So don't bank on getting them under a tree

Apple has finally put its Air Pod wireless headphones on sale.

The controversial headphones, designed for the 'Look Ma, no headphone jack' iPhone 7, were delayed in October when Apple said it needed more time to get them just right.

Whatever tweakage was required, Apple's supply chain appears not to be in full swing as the company advises “AirPods will be shipping in limited quantities at launch and customers are encouraged to check online for updates on availability and estimated delivery dates.”

In other words, don't bank on popping them under the tree for that special fanboi in your life.

The no-strings-attached earbuds can be bought online now, and will appear in Apple stores “beginning next week.” Apple's accouncement says “Stores will receive regular AirPod shipments.”

The Register imagines there will be lots of iPhone 7 users still tied to audio dongles once the calendar flips over to 2017. iPhone 7 Plus buyers may not have that problem because it looks like Apple didn't make enough.

The headphones cost US$159, £159 and AU$229, pricey for earbuds but well below the price of many over-the-ear headphones in Apple's own Beats range. ®
