+Comment Distributed database protector Datos IO has added fractional backup and recovery so you can restore the data you want faster.
Its RecoverX product has its base in being designed to back up non-relational, distributed databases such as Cassandra and MongoDB, which could be running on-premises or in the public cloud.
V2.0 came out in May and now we have v2.5, which adds queryable recovery said to enable so-called sub-table level recovery, which is faster than recovering a whole table or database. It claimed it will also provide incremental and streaming recovery, saying both reduce recovery times down to minutes and minimise storage requirements.
Although it backs up distributed databases, Datos IO says its customers want their data to be backed up and restored at the granularity of a single data centre location. So it is providing local backup of geo-distributed applications. That means local data centre recovery is faster.
RecoverX 2.5 has more security features, with support for TLS/SSL encryption, X.509 certificates, LDAP authorisation and Kerberos authentication.
Datos IO received funding from NetApp and Cisco in the summer, and has revealed that it doubled its installed customer base in the first half of its fiscal year. It claimed half its installed base were Fortune 500 companies covering many vertical markets.
It's expanding in an ill-served and fertile field because running and backing up MongoDB-like databases in the public cloud is difficult and can cost a bundle in storage costs and the workflow needs scripting unless you get an automated system like that of Datos IO.
It appears no one else has yet cracked the protection of distributed applications in hybrid clouds as well as Datos IO, so it should carry on booming in this corner of the data protection world and expanding from it. ®
