Windows 10 1809 looks unlikely to overtake prior build before 19H1 lands

Update of the Damned on 20% of boxen, ad flinger suggests

Windows 10 1809 continued its sinister seep from beneath the basement door last month as usage crested the 20 per cent mark.

This is according to ad slingers AdDuplex, though the figures have to be taken with a pinch of salt since, as the outfit cheerfully admits, the data hailed from around 5,000 Windows Store apps running the company's SDK. Or about 100,000 PCs.

In the absence of official stats from Microsoft, the numbers provide an insight into the Windows 10 landscape and show that while there has been an uptick in the usage of Windows 10 1809 (aka The Update of the Damned), which has grown from 12.4 per cent in January to 21.2 per cent this month, the April 2018 Update continues to dominate, down to 71.6 per cent from January's 80.2 per cent.

It appears highly unlikely, unless there is a late surge, that the Windows 10 October 2018 Update will be anywhere near overtaking its predecessor before the upstart 19H1 version makes its expected appearance in April.

Sending users directly to 19H1, bypassing 1809, will present an interesting challenge for the gang at Redmond, particularly considering what happened with the installer back in October. Users will, however, be less than impressed if they have to endure two large downloads to get to the latest version.

Windows 10 aside, there was little change in the makeup of Surface hardware, as the Surface Pro 4 continued to dominate. The Surface Pro 6 swapped places with the Surface 3, with the two commanding 7.84 per cent and 6.25 per cent respectively, but the Surface Laptop 2 continued to track behind both the Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 1.

Bringing up the rear was the Surface Studio and its glorious screen. Its follow-up has yet to make a dent in Ad Duplex's figures. ®
