TalkTalk returns to the email hall of shame as Pipex accounts throw weekend-long wobbly
All fine now, insists telco after Total Inability ToTalkTalk to Server Upsets Pipex peeps*
TalkTalk is back in the spotlight over its email services after ageing Pipex mail addresses stopped working abruptly on Saturday.
Reg readers wrote in over the weekend to say that, following the news of an eight-year-old zombie TalkTalk email address staggering back to life in a blizzard of spam, their Pipex accounts had mysteriously stopped working.
One forlorn Pipex customer triggered a lengthy thread on its customer service support forums, posting: "I've been trying to access my Pipex email account since 0700 today. Cannot log into Webmail, and same for POP. The latter is throwing up 0x800CCC90 and 0x800CC0F errors. No access on either Android or Windows 10."
Enraged folk promptly piled in to complain about TalkTalk customer service ("Web chat is always the same, uninformed and a waste of time") and demanding to know when the service would be fixed.
Some later reported on Sunday that emails began arriving in fits, starts and bursts, having been delayed many hours from their original sending time.
TalkTalk told us all was now well: "We're aware that some customers recently experienced problems logging in to our legacy Pipex Webmail platform. The issue has now been resolved and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Pipex was bought out by low-cost provider Tiscali in 2007, which itself was swallowed by the Talktalk-Carphone Warehouse behemoth in 2009 for £236m. A year later the Tiscali brand was killed off in the UK, though the legacy mail servers are still up and running. ®
