Hard, er, Core: Qumulo dropkicks scale-out storage software at Google's cloud

AWS shucks... they've only gone GCP

Commercial scale-out filesystem startup Qumulo's Core scale-out distributed file storage software – available on-premises and AWS – has now been ported to Google's cloud too, and should be available from the GCP Marketplace later this year.

The company has also announced CloudStudio for monitoring and evaluation (M&E) file workload cloud bursting as well as a high-availability cluster product.

Qumulo said CloudStudio would allow media and entertainment users to move file storage workspaces – meaning desktops, apps and file data – between its on-premises, AWS and GCP environments with no changes to apps or user interface. This enables workload bursting to the cloud and continuity across geographies and time zones.

The Seattle data storage biz has hooked up with Teradici with its PCoIP remote display protocol technology and Cloud Access Software for graphics-intensive applications and content. The two plan to demonstrate their integrated products at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, 6-11 April.

Qumulo Continuity Cluster lets on-premises customers replicate their data to a cluster running in AWS (but not GCP, yet) for business continuity and disaster recovery. Users can switch the AWS cluster on before replication to reduce costs.

In the AWS cloud, users' elastic block storage (EBS) volumes are programmatically snapshotted to AWS S3 for protection.

Qumulo appears convinced its customers are moving towards a hybrid on-premises and public cloud world, where they require the same environment and facilities irrespective of where they are operating it - in a word, on-premises or in the AWS and Google clouds.

It cited Allied Market Research saying the global cloud storage market size is estimated to reach more than $97bn by 2022, at a compound annual growth rate of 24.8 per cent, to back up its thinking.

We imagine it would eventually support Microsoft's Azure too. We have asked Qumulo for comment. ®
