Cray's found a super scooper, $1.3bn's gonna buy you. HPE's the one

Substantial losses weren't much fun, now we'll wait till deal is done


HPE is buying supercomputing veteran Cray Inc for $1.3bn after a multi-year squeeze in the supers sector that culminated in "substantial loss" for the HPC-flinger at the start of 2019.

The San Jose firm said it was looking to get in on the academia and government high performance computing markets.

In a joint statement, the pair said they looked to spin up supercomputing as a service and flog a wider high performance product set for data-intensive workloads.

HPE's chief exec Antonio Neri said: "Answers to some of society's most pressing challenges are buried in massive amounts of data. Only by processing and analyzing this data will we be able to unlock the answers to critical challenges across medicine, climate change, space and more."

The supers-flinger employs 1,300 people around the world. It has headquarters in Seattle and makes its machines in the US.

Cray recently signed a deal for an Exascale supercomputer contract with the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory valued at over $600m. The system, which aims to be the world's fastest, will be built using Cray's Shasta system architecture and Slingshot interconnect.

HPE's previous foray into supercomputing was the purchase of SGI in 2016 – how that fits into the new strategy remains to be seen.

HPE will release its second quarter results on Thursday next week.

Cray's most recent quarter, ended March 31 2019, brought in $72m in revenue compared to $80m the year before, and it made a loss of $29m compared to a loss of $25m in the first quarter of 2018.

Cray described this financial year as one of "transition" before it begins to ship its Shasta exascale beasts. The company had admitted it expected "to recognise a substantial net loss" for 2019.

Engineer Seymour Cray started Cray Research in 1972, and in 1976 released the 5.5-ton 64-bit Cray 1 system – running at 80MHz and addressing a maximum of 1 megaword of main memory – with a price tag of around $5m to $9m.

    Via a cloud subscription, natch – this is the 2020s

    D-Wave Systems has put its next-generation Advantage2 quantum computer into the cloud, or at least some form of it.

    This experimental machine will be accessible from D-Wave's Leap online service, we're told. We first learned of the experimental system last year when the biz revealed its Clarity Roadmap, which includes plans for a gate-model quantum system. Advantage2 sports D-Wave's latest topology and qubit design that apparently increases connectivity and aims to deliver greater performance by reducing noise.

    "By making the Advantage2 prototype available in the Leap quantum cloud service today, the company is providing an early snapshot for exploration and learning by developers and researchers," D-Wave said in a canned statement.

    The most eye-catching bit of AMD news among the supercomputing set is that the announcement of the Frontier supercomputer at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which displaced Japan's Arm-based Fugaku cluster for the No. 1 spot on the Top500 list of the world's most-powerful publicly known systems.

    Top500 updates its list twice a year and published its most recent update on Monday.
