Indian IT outsourcing giant Wipro picks Nutanix to help tame Oracle and SQL Server
Managed databases that feel like they're caressed in cloud
Wipro and Nutanix have bonded over managing databases after the Indian services company created a new range of “Digital Database Services” based on the hyperconverged upstart’s tooling.
The essence of the service is database-as-a-service – if your database runs on Nutanix. Wipro’s not fussed if you run Nutanix’s own appliances, or the Nutanix stack on hardware from Lenovo, Dell or HPE. Nor do Wipro or Nutanix care how you pay for your infrastructure: if you buy Nutanix from HPE under its Greenlake opex product, that’ll be cool. You’ll just get to pay Wipro, too, for its services.
Wipro says clients already asking for discounts and restructured deals, decides not to offer guidance
READ MORENutanix’s Era database administration and automation tool will be Wipro’s weapon of choice to drive the service. Era currently handles Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle and PostgreSQL, with more databases to come, so this has broad appeal.
Wipro will target customers that want to consolidate databases into shared infrastructure, but also want a cloud-like experience. However this is not a cloud offering: the two companies are betting that customers want a cloud-like experience for the infrastructure underpinning their databases but don’t want to migrate databases to an actual cloud.
Hyperconverged infrastructure that behaves a lot like a public cloud is still Nutanix’s main game. Having a global whale like Wipro pick Era to power a new services offering is a strong endorsement of Nutanix’s other wares. Wipro gets a nice new offering to complement its other Oracle services. ®
