Huawei has confirmed UK pricing and availability of its latest mid-range blower, the P40 Lite 5G, a pared-down version of this year's flagship with tapered price tag to match – starting at £379.99.
Driving this phone is Huawei's octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 820 platform, which bundles a Mali-G57 GPU, as well as the firm's Da Vinci NPU.
This chip first premiered on the Honor 30S and uses a slightly modified big.LITTLE architecture, packing one Cortex-A76 core clocked at 2.36GHz, a further three Cortex-A76 cores at 2.2GHz, and four power-sipping Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.84GHz.
The P40 Lite 5G's display is a 6.5-inch FHD+ affair, with support for HDR 10, as well as a hole-punch that houses the phone's 16MP front-facing camera. This is accompanied by 6GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, and a 4,000mAh battery that supports Huawei's proprietary 40W fast-charging tech.
Like its bigger brother, the P40 Lite 5G packs a quad-camera setup, although it's nowhere near as impressive, with Huawei's homegrown RYYB sensors ditched in favour of Sony's 64MP IMX582 kit.
In close formation are the usual suspects on a multi-camera setup, including an 8MP wide-angle lens, a 2MP super macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.
The P40 Lite 5G runs Huawei's latest EMUI software, which is based on the open-source version of Android. That means there's no Google Play Store – or any of the Chocolate Factory's other apps for that matter. Instead, you get the Huawei App Gallery, which is a bit hit-and-miss, with many of the most common applications conspicuously absent.
Tempted? The P40 Lite 5G is available to pre-order from 3 June to 16 June, with the device formally hitting shelves on 17 June. Anyone who stumps the money up in advance can also bag themselves a free pair of Huawei's Freebuds 3 wireless earphones.
While the phone is priced competitively, one can't help thinking that it'll inevitably struggle to convince customers, thanks to the absence of the mainstream Android app store. This makes the P40 Lite a particularly hard sell, given the presence of other similarly priced devices, like the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G. ®
