Trump backs Oracle as potential TikTok buyer

Larry Ellison hailed as 'terrific guy' but Big Red stays shtum on its intentions

Donald Trump has signaled his support of Oracle as a buyer for contentions made-in-China social media app TikTok.

"I think that Oracle would be certainly somebody that could handle it," the US President said at a press conference in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday. He also called Trump fundraiser and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison a "tremendous guy."

Trump's support of such a deal comes after yesterday's news that Oracle had reportedly expressed interest in acquiring TikTok's operations across the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Oracle has remained silent on its intentions and has offered no hint of why it finds TikTok attractive. Speculation right now centers on the possibility of integrating TikTok user data with Oracle's marketing products, which could increase their value for business-to-consumer marketers.

Microsoft is also considering a play for TikTok, but Oracle is reportedly willing to trump Redmond's bid.

If either tech titan wants TikTok they'll have to move fast as the Trump administration has said it will ban the Chinese social media app from America unless it agrees to sell its local operations to an American company before November 20.

At the Yuma rally, Trump reiterated that he believes the US Treasury should take a cut for his part in any deal. ®
