Job alert The Register has a couple of vacancies open on our editorial team that we would like to fill immediately. Without further ado, here are the details:

News reporter

One of our long-time regular Register contributors is taking a break to write a book, and while they're away, we need a similarly fearless and knowledgeable journalist to take the baton during that time. Thus, this position is available as a full-time, five-days-a-week, six-month contract.

Typically, you will:

• Pitch news article ideas to editors on a daily basis, and file copy in our house style to deadline. You may also be assigned stories to cover.
• Interview sources and read up on documentation and other industry material to produce informed, fair, and accurate coverage.
• Attend daily editorial team meetings to discuss and develop article ideas.
• Take time out from daily news writing to produce longer analysis and feature pieces.
• Make El Reg an essential and reliable resource for IT professionals, software engineers, and other technology specialists.

Ideally, you will:

• Be a journalist with at least two years of experience in covering IT and business-level technology, plus a proven ability to find and accurately report information before others.
• Expand our coverage in one or more of these areas: information security, data center networking and hardware, semiconductors, internet infrastructure and policy, public-sector IT, and business software.
• Be based in North America though strong applicants in other parts of the world will be considered.
• Collaborate well with colleagues while working remotely.
• Write clear and concise English.
• Cut through vendor waffle and tell our discerning audience what's really happening in their industry.

In return, we'll offer you at least competitive compensation dependent on experience.

Copy editor

We are seeking an experienced and pleasantly pedantic copy editor, also known as a sub-editor, to work on titles across the portfolio of Situation Publishing, the owner of The Register. This is a full-time, five-days-a-week permanent position.

Typically, you will:

• Work through a daily queue of articles due to be published on our websites, which include Blocks & Files, The Register, and DevClass.
• Proofread and, where possible, fact-check pieces, and ensure they adhere to our house style.
• Suggest headlines, sub-headlines, images and captions, and other furniture for articles.
• Assist editors with other production tasks, where time allows, such as moderating article comments and handling minor corrections to articles.
• Polish our work so that it lives up to the high standards of accuracy and fairness set not only by us but also by our audience of IT professionals and other technology specialists.

Ideally, you will:

• Be a production journalist with an extraordinary eye for detail, and have at least two years of experience in editing coverage of IT and business-level technology.
• Be familiar with the products, technologies, vendors, and people in the worlds of enterprise storage, data center hardware, software development, and business software applications.
• Be based in North America, UK, Europe, Australia, or New Zealand though strong applicants in other parts of the world will be considered.
• Collaborate well with colleagues while working remotely.
• Have a tight grasp of English, and understand the need for clear and concise writing.
