Amazon to bring a full region to Israel, land of large government contracts

Three availability zones prophesied to open in the first half of 2023

Amazon Web Services has announced it will bring a full region to the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

The new region will feature three Availability Zones, each independent yet connected with metro fiber high-bandwidth, low-latency network connections. Within Israel, AWS already offices in both Tel Aviv and Haifa, an AWS direct connect location and an Amazon CloudFront Edge location. The country is also the home of Amazon hardware subsidiary Annapurna Labs and hosts the "Floor 28" education facility.

In April, AWS, alongside Google, beat out Microsoft, Oracle and IBM to win a billion dollar tender for the Nimbus Project that will provide cloud services to Israeli government organizations out of local data centers. Nimbus will help Israel's government as its services slide over to the digital world.

Currently AWS has 81 operational Availability Zones in 25 regions and 21 more underway in seven regions. The Israel Availability Zones are slated to open in the first half of 2023.

Oracle launched a new Israel public cloud region in Jerusalem in February 2021 and Microsoft is building one in the Modiin area between Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem. Microsoft’s Availability Zone has been delayed until 2022.

Just last month, AWS announced United Arab Emirates (UAE) will get its own AWS region too, also with three Availability Zones. ®
