Ordinary salaried Brits: Sweet! Payday! Banking giant HSBC: Oh no it isn't
Customers hacked off as online and mobile service wobbles
HSBC has confirmed it is experiencing problems with its online and mobile banking operations after customers took to social media to complain about the lack of service.
A statement on HSBC's Twitter feed admitted:
We're aware some customers are having problems using Online & Mobile Banking. We're really sorry and are working hard to fix this. Please check back here for the latest updates.— HSBC UK (@HSBC_UK) July 30, 2021
The timing of the outage could not be worse as businesses look to settle bills and pay staff at the end of the month and ahead of the weekend.
Same, I managed to pay half of my team then got kicked off— Susan (@mossequ1) July 30, 2021
According to Downdetector, users started reported problems between 8 and 9am BST this morning just as many were starting their day's work.
It's not clear at this stage what's behind the outage, prompting some to criticise the lack of information from HSBC.
HSBC's status page suggests that the bank's systems are all functioning well. But that doesn't chime with what some customers are experiencing.
What’s the point in have a status page when all it ever has are green ticks. At least move it to amber or red depending on the number of reports.— Chris Davidson (@_LordDavidson) July 30, 2021
No one from HSBC was available for comment at the time of writing.
Earlier this week, login infrastructure issues were blamed for locking out thousands of businesses from online accounting software outfit Xero.
The unscheduled downtime ruined the working day for many business owners and bookkeepers looking to access and work on their web-based accounts.
Many were also hacked off by Xero's lack of communication and status updates during the incident. ®
