HPE picks up OpsRamp to sprinkle some AIOps on Greenlake multi-cloud

Hopes for predictive insights and automation, but no word on what it'll pay for that

HPE is looking to buy IT management specialist OpsRamp and fold it into its Greenlake IT-as-a-service platform to smooth out the creases businesses can face when dealing with multi-vendor and multi-cloud estates.

The IT hardware biz said it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire OpsRamp, one of a growing number of companies developing so-called AIOps technologies that apply machine learning to infrastructure management and automation.

The purchase is expected to close in the third quarter of HPE’s 2023 fiscal year, which covers May to July, but exactly how much the company is stumping up to acquire OpsRamp is unclear at this stage; HPE told us the terms are not being disclosed for this transaction.

According to OpsRamp, its SaaS-based platform gives organizations real-time information to manage their entire hybrid IT stack, and predictive insights and proactive automation are intended to result in speedier resolution of issues.

HPE wants to integrate those operations management capabilities into its GreenLake platform and provide supporting HPE services. HPE believes it can profit by helping customers reduce the complexity of operating tech estates that extend across the public cloud, colocation sites, and on-premises.

The company isn’t short of its own management tools, so HPE is specifically acquiring OpsRamp for some multi-cloud capabilities that it doesn't have itself. The company told us some customers are today struggling with several different cloud environments, each with their own operating models and tools, which drives up the cost and complexity of managing it all.

OpsRamp’s technology will also be available standalone as-a-service, but also embedded within HPE’s compute, storage, and networking solutions. Organizations will have one platform from which to automate, orchestrate, and operate their hybrid cloud estate, HPE said.

“This acquisition advances HPE hybrid cloud leadership and expands the reach of the HPE GreenLake platform into IT Operations Management,” said HPE CTO Fidelma Russo.

HPE disclosed that OpsRamp was actually part of Hewlett Packard Pathfinder’s venture capital investments in 2020, so its interest in the company goes back at least that far.

“The integration of OpsRamp’s hybrid digital operations management solution with the HPE GreenLake platform will provide an unmatched offering for organizations seeking to innovate and thrive in a complex, multi-cloud world,” OpsRamp CEO Varma Kunaparaju said in a statement.

HPE saw its revenues grow 12 percent year-on-year to $7.8 billion for the first quarter of its fiscal 2023 ended January 31, the company’s highest since the start of 2016. ®
