Mac daddy Woz hospitalized in Mexico over mystery malady

State of Apple co-founder's health is unclear – it could be a stroke or vertigo

Reports indicate that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has been hospitalized in Mexico City following a speech at the World Business Forum.

According to Spanish news outlet El País, Wozniak was taken to ABC Santa Fe hospital in Mexico City for an emergency MRI on Wednesday after suffering a suspected ischemic stroke, which is caused by a blood blockage in the brain.

American tabloid TMZ, on the other hand, claimed that Woz was hospitalized following his speech after he told his wife that he was feeling strange. Wozniak apparently sought treatment after his wife, Janet Hill, insisted he go to the hospital. According to TMZ, Woz is actually suffering from a far less serious condition – vertigo.

Regardless, Wozniak is reportedly still in a Mexico City emergency room, where doctors are performing tests and he's allegedly in a stable condition. Members of Wozniak's team are reportedly en route to assess whether he requires further treatment in the US.

Mexico City is one of the highest-elevation cities in the world, sitting at 7,349 feet (2,240 meters) above sea level – far higher than Woz's home in San Jose. According to the American Heart Association, travel to high altitudes can increase health risks for folks with heart conditions, and lower atmospheric pressure puts more stress on circulatory systems.

Wozniak, 73, co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs in 1976. He later helped fund the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and has contributed to numerous philanthropic organizations and causes.
