Yahoo! charges! for NYTimes! content!

Thin end of the wedge

The creep towards paid-for online content continued today with news that access to the NYTimes.com's archives is now available at a price on Yahoo!.

The archives date back to January 1st 2000 and individual stories can be bought for $2.50 each - the same price as charged by the NYTimes.com's own archive service.

This agreement with NYTimes.com is the first premium archived news service available from Yahoo!. And, will not, no doubt, be the last.

Of course, such a move should come as no surprise since Yahoo! has said it is looking at finding new ways to generate cash other than through advertising.

In March Yahoo! announced that it would start charging for its email forwarding and POP3 services.

Elsewhere, Lycos said yesterday that it too would start charging for a premium email service.

Other outfits that have started asking for cash include FT.com, and the Times Online.
