Facebook may be slowly tip-toeing its way gently around cry babies who have yet to turn their profiles into scrapbooks for their "friends" via the new Timeline feature. But the dominant social network has a new tactic up its sleeve: the company is trying to entice more people into its "frictionless sharing" playpen with the arrival of apps.
Facebook's so-called "open graph" service has initially involved a deal with 60 partners including Ticketmaster, Rotten Tomatoes and TripAdvisor, which allows users on the network to share what they're doing outside of Mark Zuckerberg's vacuum-packed silo.
It's part of a growing trend among the likes of Google, Facebook and others to make their online estates that little bit more sticky.
Ad revenues are the obvious end goal here, a potentially sweet side-effect is that Facebook can begin to bill itself as more of an entertainment portal.
"Soon, there will be apps for all types of interests, as more apps will launch over time. Whether you love snowboarding, gardening, hiking, or knitting, or something else, there will be an app for you," Facebook's Carl Sjogreen said.
"Timeline apps are for the activities you want to share with friends. You choose when to add an app, and you decide who can see it. After you've added an app, you can always remove posts directly from timeline, and you can also edit your settings from your personal Activity Log." ®
