Apple iPad 3 to sport 3D screen a 'dead cert'

Studios gagging for it, insists movie biz mole

If claims that Apple's next iPad will sport a 2048 x 1536 display containing four times as many pixels as the current one stretched credibility, one rumour, that successor to the iPad 2 will incorporate a glasses-free 3D screen, takes it to breaking point.

The claim comes from an alleged Hollywood insider who told RCR Wireless: "The fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert."

The mole also said studios were busy preparing lots of 3D content to be released in time for the tablet's launch, whenever that is.

We're not convinced, though if anyone can do a good job of presenting display that can do good glasses-free 3D without messing up all the 2D content, it's Apple.

3D is a feature that would bring limited value to the iPad - far more buyers won't want it than will - and it could up the cost considerably.

Besides, Hollywood studios seem to have enough of a problem with the notion of Apple as a leading supplier of 2D content let alone 3D material that the notion they're all going ape for a 3D iPad seems unlikely.

3D in general, perhaps, but not specifically for the iPad 3. ®
